On January 28, 2021, Sergey Savelyev, a senior expert of the Institute for Foreign Policy Research, took part on-line in the 4th meeting of the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan.
S.Savelyev drew attention to the statement of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K. Tokayev at the UN General Assembly that achieving a world free of nuclear weapons remains the main priority for our country.
It was also noted that, despite the pandemic, the beginning of this year has become to some extent encouraging in the area of arms control and non-proliferation - the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons has entered into force, the United States and Russia have agreed to extend the START Treaty, positive signals in renewal of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for the Iranian nuclear program.
S.Savelyev suggested in 2021 to pay special attention to the events dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk test site, as well as to the promotion of the initiatives of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan-ElbasyN.Nazarbayev in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
The Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairsis an international non-governmental organization working on disarmament, arms control, nuclear non-proliferation, international security, and scientific cooperation. The Pugwash movement began in 1955, when 11 world-renowned scientists, including A.Einstein, F.Joliot-Curie, B.Russell, M.Bourne, P.W.Bridgeman, L.Infeld, L.Pauling, J.Rotblat, issued a manifesto calling for a conference against the use of nuclear energy for military purposes.
