On July 14, 2021, an international scientific and practical conference on the topic "Regional security in Asia in the context of preventing new challenges and threats" was convined in an online format within the framework of Kazakhstan's chairmanship in the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA).
The event was organized by the Foreign Policy Research Institute under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan in cooperation with the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Institute of World Economics and Politics under the Nursultan Nazarbayev Foundation, and with the support of the CICA Secretariat.
On behalf of the management of the Institute the participants were welcomed by Manarbek Kabaziyev the Deputy Chair of the Board of the FPRI (the text of the speech is attached). The Executive Director of the CICA Secretariat Ambassador Kairat Sarybai informed about the progress of the CICA process and Kazakhstan's CICA chairmanship priorities.
During two sessions representatives of 17 CICA member states participated in the discussions on the topics: "New challenges and threats to regional security in the CICA space and the experience of states in countering them" and "Prospects for cooperation within the framework of the CICA to ensure regional security".
Experts from the Asan Institute for Policy Studies (Korea), the Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (China), the Center for Strategic Research under the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, the National Security Advisory (Iraq), the Islamabad Institute of Stategic Studies (Pakistan), the Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University (Turkey) shared their views on the development of the CICA and agreed on the need for interaction and exchange of experience on measures to overcome the crisis caused by Covid-19 and ensure the post-crisis recovery and development of states.
The Conference participants underlined the need to further strengthen cooperation of the CICA member states to ensure comprehensive security and welcomed the expansion of the Catalog of Confidence building Measures.
