On October 21, 2020, Sergey Savelyev, a senior expert of the Foreign Policy Research Institute, took part in the online seminar "Biotechnology in Kazakhstan: global challenges during a pandemic", organized by the Pugwash Committee of Kazakhstan. The topics of the seminar included the challenges and threats associated with the coronavirus pandemic, development of drugs and vaccines, and biological safety.
S.Savelyev emphasized the importance of implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction, as well as UN Security Council Resolution 1540 (non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction).
The importance of the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.Tokayev on the establishment of the International Agency for Biological Safety, put forward at the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, as well as the proposal of the first President of Kazakhstan-ElbasyN.Nazarbayev - to develop and adopt international binding agreements to ban the creation of new types of weapons of mass destruction through new scientific discoveries, and create a UN register of such scientific developments, which could be used for creation and advancement of weapons of mass destruction (Manifesto: The World. The 21st century)” wasstressed.
